German fruit words are useful in markets, recipes, menus, and simple everyday conversations. In this lesson, you will learn common fruits with their articles, useful plural forms, and short examples for A1 practice.
Basic Fruits
In German, learn each fruit with its article: der, die, or das. The article is part of the word pattern and helps you build correct sentences later.
- Der – Apple
- Die – Banana
- Die – Orange
- Die – Grape
- Die – Strawberry
- Die – Pear
- Der – Peach
- Die – Cherry
- Die – Lemon
- Die – Melon
Examples:
- Ich esse einen Apfel. (I eat an apple.)
- Sie kauft Bananen. (She buys bananas.)
- Wir haben Trauben. (We have grapes.)
Tropical Fruits and Berries
These words are helpful for juices, desserts, hot weather, and shopping.
- Die – Watermelon
- Die – Pineapple
- Die – Mango
- Die Kokosnuss – Coconut
- Die Papaya – Papaya
- Die – Kiwi
- Die Limette – Lime
- Die Blaubeere – Blueberry

Examples:
- Diese Wassermelone ist sehr süß. (This watermelon is very sweet.)
- Ich möchte einen Ananassaft. (I would like pineapple juice.)
- Himbeeren schmecken gut mit Joghurt. (Raspberries taste good with yogurt.)
Articles and Plural Forms
For A1 German, focus on the forms you will actually use first.
- Der appears with some fruit names: der Apfel, der Pfirsich.
- Die appears with many fruit names: die Banane, die Orange, die Traube.
- In the plural, the definite article is always die: die Äpfel, die Bananen, die Trauben.
- Some plurals add -n or -en: Bananen, Orangen, Trauben.
- Der Apfel changes vowel in the plural: die Äpfel.
Examples:
- Ich mag Äpfel. (I like apples.)
- Er kauft Orangen. (He buys oranges.)
Common Confusions
Zitrone and Limette are not the same
- Die – Lemon
- Die Limette – Lime
This difference matters in drinks and recipes.
Traube does not mean raisin
- Die – Grape
- Die Rosine – Raisin
For “grape,” use Traube. For “raisin,” use Rosine.
Practice by saying each fruit with its article: der Apfel, die Banane, die Orange, die Traube. German feels easier when the article and noun are learned together.
