Articles and Plural Forms
For A1 Spanish, start with a few practical patterns.
- El appears with many masculine animals: el , el , el .
- La appears with feminine animals in this list: la tortuga, la gallina, la rana.
- Many plurals add -s after a vowel: perros, gatos, ranas.
- Words ending in a consonant often add -es: → peces, → ratones, → leones.
- Some accents disappear in plural: → ratones, → leones.
Examples:
- Veo dos perros en el parque. (I see two dogs in the park.)
- Hay tres peces en la pecera. (There are three fish in the tank.)
Common Confusions
Ratón is not boca
- El – Mouse
- La boca – Mouth
They are different words. Use ratón for the animal and boca for mouth.
Pollo and gallina depend on context
- El – Chicken, often as food
- La gallina – Hen
- El gallo – Rooster
For the female animal, use la gallina.
Practice with pictures or real animals: say el perro, el gato, el pájaro, el pez, and el león out loud. Learning the article with the noun makes Spanish easier later.
