Spanish fruit words are useful in markets, recipes, menus, and simple everyday conversations. In this lesson, you will learn common fruits, their gender, plural forms, and short examples you can use right away.

Basic Fruits

In Spanish, fruit names usually appear with la or el. Learn the article with the word because it helps you build correct sentences later.

  • La – Apple
  • El plátano – Banana
  • La – Orange
  • La – Grape
  • La – Strawberry
  • La – Pear
  • El – Peach
  • La – Cherry
  • El – Lemon
  • El – Melon

Examples:

  • Como una manzana. (I eat an apple.)
  • Ella compra plátanos. (She buys bananas.)
  • Tenemos uvas. (We have grapes.)

Tropical Fruits and Berries

These words are helpful for juices, desserts, hot weather, and shopping at a market.

  • La – Watermelon
  • La – Pineapple
  • El – Mango
  • El coco – Coconut
  • La papaya – Papaya
  • El – Kiwi
  • La lima – Lime
  • El – Blueberry
  • La – Raspberry
  • La mora – Blackberry

Examples:

  • Esta sandía está muy dulce. (This watermelon is very sweet.)
  • Quiero un jugo de piña. (I want pineapple juice.)
  • Las frambuesas van bien con yogur. (Raspberries go well with yogurt.)

Gender and Plural Forms

For A1 Spanish, focus on simple patterns first.

  • La is common with many fruit names: la manzana, la naranja, la fresa.
  • El appears with some fruit names: el plátano, el limón, el mango.
  • Most plurals add -s after a vowel: manzanas, uvas, fresas.
  • Words ending in a consonant often add -es: limón → limones, melocotón → melocotones.

Note: Accents can disappear in some plurals: limón becomes limones.

Examples:

  • Me gustan las fresas. (I like strawberries.)
  • Él compra limones. (He buys lemons.)

Common Confusions

Limón and lima are not the same

  • El – Lemon
  • La lima – Lime

In drinks and recipes, this difference matters.

Uva does not mean raisin

  • La – Grape
  • La pasa – Raisin

If you want to say “grape,” use uva. If you mean “raisin,” use pasa.

Practice by naming real fruits with their article: la manzana, el plátano, la naranja, la uva. Learning the article and the word together makes Spanish sentences easier.
