  • Le – Grape

Articles and Plural Forms

For A1 French, start with a few simple patterns.

  • La appears with many feminine fruit names: la pomme, la banane, la fraise.
  • Le appears with masculine fruit names: le raisin, le citron, le melon.
  • L' appears before a vowel sound: l'orange, l'ananas.
  • Most plurals add -s: pommes, bananes, fraises.
  • In plural phrases, you often see les or des: les pommes, des bananes.

Examples:

  • J'aime les fraises. (I like strawberries.)
  • Il achète des oranges. (He buys oranges.)

Common Confusions

Raisin does not mean raisin in English

  • Le – Grape
  • Les raisins secs – Raisins

For “grape,” use raisin. For “raisins,” use raisins secs.

Citron and citron vert are not the same

  • Le – Lemon
  • Le citron vert – Lime

This difference matters in drinks and recipes.

Practice by naming real fruits with their article: la pomme, la banane, l'orange, le raisin. Learning the article with the word makes French sentences easier later.
