What this library covers
The five books here focus on the building blocks of French. Three are for beginners (words, verbs and phrases) and two help you speak with more detail at intermediate level.
A suggested order
- Start with the Essential French Words Book to build your everyday vocabulary.
- Continue with the French Verbs Book to learn the most common actions.
- Use the French Phrases Book to learn complete expressions you can use straight away.
- When you can build simple sentences, add the French Connectors Book and the French Adverbs Book to link ideas and describe how, when and how often things happen.
Tips for English speakers
- Cognates help, but check them. French and English share thousands of words, yet librairie is a bookshop, not a library.
- Silent letters are normal. Many final consonants are not pronounced. Read the examples aloud to train your ear.
- Learn phrases as blocks. Expressions like il y a or ça dépend are easier to remember as a whole than word by word.
