Articles, plurals, and small patterns

Italian articles help you remember gender and sound. Many food words use il: il pane, il riso, il latte, il formaggio. Many others use la: la pasta, la mela, la pizza, la zuppa. Before a vowel, you often see l': l'uovo, l'arancia, l'avocado.

Some plurals change the final vowel:

  • La mela → Le mele – The apple → The apples
  • Il pomodoro → I pomodori – The tomato → The tomatoes
  • La patata → Le patate – The potato → The potatoes
  • Il biscotto → I biscotti – The cookie → The cookies

When you order one item, use un or una: un panino, una zuppa, una pizza, un biscotto.

Common mistakes

Using essere for hunger or thirst

Italian uses avere for hunger and thirst.

  • Ho fame – I am hungry
  • Ho sete – I am thirsty

Do not say sono fame or sono sete.

Confusing cibo and pasto

Cibo means food in general. Pasto means a complete meal, such as breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

  • Mi piace il cibo italiano – I like Italian food
  • Il pranzo è un pasto – Lunch is a meal

Forgetting the article before a food word

Do not learn only pane or pasta. Learn il pane and la pasta so you remember the gender and use un or una more naturally.

Start with short sentences: vorrei una pizza, mangio riso, mi piace la zuppa. Then change one word at a time: vorrei un panino, vorrei una insalata, prendo pesce.
