Pets and Familiar Animals

In French, learn each animal with le, la, or l'. The article helps you remember the gender of the noun.

  • Le – Dog

  • Le – Rabbit
  • L' – Bird
  • Le – Fish
  • Le – Horse
  • La – Mouse

Articles and Plural Forms

For A1 French, start with these practical patterns.

  • Le appears with many masculine animals: le , le , le .
  • La appears with feminine animals in this list: la , la tortue, la grenouille.
  • L' appears before a vowel sound: l', l', l'.
  • Many plurals add -s: chiens, chats, lapins.
  • Some forms change more: le → les chevaux, l' → les oiseaux.

Examples:

  • Je vois deux chiens dans le parc. (I see two dogs in the park.)
  • Il y a trois poissons dans l'aquarium. (There are three fish in the tank.)

Common Confusions

Poisson and poison are not the same

  • – Fish
  • Poison – Poison

The double s changes the meaning and pronunciation.

Chat does not mean online chat

  • Le – Cat
  • Le tchat – Online chat

For the animal, use le chat.

Practice with pictures or real animals: say le chien, le chat, l'oiseau, le poisson, and le lion out loud. Learning the article with the animal prevents many mistakes later.
